2005 The Taped Building (Stockholm)

A local contractor was walking me around, when he showed me a small building we was renovating in Stockholm old town.
At the street level he had used a yellow & black tape to warn pedestrians to stay clear of the scaffoldings. I’ve always been fascinated by that sort of tape (fairly similar the one used for police lines).
I almost begged the contractor to let me instruct the workers where to use it, supposedly to protect some features of the building while it was being repainted.
This is how brash Pop-art colors were temporarily added to a non-descript facade. Rather than being irreverent, the new cheerful make-up gave the facade a quite unusual character.

2005 Il Palazzo scotchato

Un imprenditore edile di Stoccolma mi stava facendo visitare la città vecchia, quando mi ha indicato un modesto edificio che stava restaurando.
A livello della strada aveva usato un nastro giallo e nero per segnalare ai pedoni il ponteggio.
Confesso che sono sempre stato affascinato da quel tipo di nastro, simile a quello usato dalla polizia per delimitare la scena di un crimine.

Ho quasi supplicato l’imprenditore di lasciarmi dare delle istruzioni agli operai sul dove usarlo, in teoria per proteggere alcune caratteristiche originali dell’edificio mentre veniva ridipinto.
In questo modo gli sfacciati colori della Pop Art sono stati sovrapposti, sia pure per pochi giorni, a una facciata abbastanza anonima.
Lontano dall’essere irriverente, questo allegro make-up ha conferito alla facciata un carattere abbastanza insolito.
