2007 The Crabs’ Experiment – Micro Land Art 1 (Oman)

On an Omani beach, tiny crabs and the peculiar quality of the sand, inspired me a rather fanciful experiment.

Using a natural food additive, that causes no damage to the crabs and to this pristine environment, I helped, so to say, the crabs to roll up tiny sand spheres, while building their burrows. As expected, they spread the spheres according to their whims, favoring the layout of a labyrinthine network of alignments, clusters, lanes and stellar distributions. In a matter of minutes they had built a different landscape, just if millenarian habits had been swept away by a sudden epiphany.

Will my demiurgic gesture contribute to creating new habits in the crabs and in due time the embryo of an alien culture?

2007 Progetto “Granchi” – Micro Land Art 1 (Oman)

Su una spiaggia dell’Oman, minuscoli granchietti e la particolare qualità della sabbia, mi hanno ispirato un esperimento piuttosto fantasioso.

Usando un additivo alimentare naturale, che non provoca danni ai granchi e a questo ambiente incontaminato, ho aiutato, per così dire, i granchi a arrotolare piccole sfere di sabbia, mentre costruivano le loro tane. Come prevedevo, hanno sparso le sfere in base ai loro capricci, favorendo una rete labirintica di allineamenti, ammassi, corsie e distribuzioni stellari. Nel giro di pochi minuti avevano costruito un paesaggio diverso, come se abitudini millenarie fossero state spazzate via da un’improvvisa rivelazione.

Il mio gesto demiurgico contribuirà a creare nuove abitudini nei granchi?
E, a tempo debito, l’embrione di una cultura aliena?
