2011 Generation gap (Pisa)

Grandson meets grandfather.
While a few days in Pisa, I walked every morning  along a tree-lined promenade on the Arno’s riverbank. The trees had been planted almost two centuries ago and some had died and not been replaced. The stumps had not been removed and they were a strong and sad reminder of the missing trees.
I decided to take action, bought a few stalks from a nursery and did the best I could to implant them

I returned to Pisa a couple of months later and some had taken roots: the young trees had found nourishment in the the remnants of the old ones.
It was comforting to imagine that there was a physical as well as ideal continuity: the still frail youngster had somehow grafted with the mighty roots and experience of his grandfather.

2011 Salto generazionale

Il nipote incontra il nonno.
Soggiornando per qualche giorno a Pisa, avevo preso l’abitudine di passeggiare ogni mattina lungo un viale alberato in riva all’Arno. Piantati quasi due secoli prima, alcuni alberi erano morti e non erano stati sostituiti. Neppure i ceppi erano stati rimossi e presentavano un’intensa e triste testimonianza degli alberi scomparsi.
D’impeto decisi di prendere l’iniziativa e acquistai in un vivaio alcuni minuscoli alberelli; ho poi scavato i ceppi in modo da creare una “tasca” abbastanza grande da contenere un po’ di terra, che si trasformasse in una sorta di vaso naturale, permettendo alle pianticelle di crescere.

Sono tornato a Pisa dopo un paio di mesi e alcuni avevano messo radici: i giovani alberi avevano trovato nutrimento nelle parti in decomposizione delle piante più antiche.
Era confortante immaginare che ci fosse una continuità fisica oltre che ideale: il giovane e ancora fragile si era innestato su le possenti radici e l’esperienza del nonno.
A tempo debito, un poco alla volta, occuperà completamente lo spazio e la “memoria” dell’albero che lo ha preceduto.
