Mountain Surgery

This work, which took place in Spring 1989 in South Tyrol, was born with a practical purpose.
It had to contain a sliding mountainside that could have blocked the underlying river, with an increased risk of flash floodings.

I designed a reinforced concrete bone structure that would remain exposed only for the duration of the works. It was meant to symbolise and expose the ribcage of the mountain. After a couple of months a program of reforestation would conceal the wound and the inner structure, and the mountain would reacquire its pristine aspect.

Quest’opera, realizzata nella primavera del 1989 in Alto Adige, nacque con uno scopo eminentemente pratico.
Si trattava di mettere in sicurezza un costone che poteva franare e bloccare un corso d’acqua, aumentando così il rischio di inondazioni improvvise.

Ho progettato una struttura fatta di “costole” in cemento armato, che sarebbe rimasta a vista solo per la durata dei lavori. Doveva simboleggiare ed esporre la cassa toracica della montagna. Dopo un paio di mesi un programma di riforestazione avrebbe nascosto la ferita, la sua struttura interna e la montagna avrebbe riacquistato il suo aspetto incontaminato.
