1994 Inland Sails

This installation was set in the hills behind Monterosso in Liguria.
Traditionally local farmers harvested olives spreading large canvases between the trees and then beating the branches with long canes. The steep terraces overlooking the sea, where the trees are planted, do not allow harvesting with mechanical systems and for this reason the traditional olive groves are being abandoned.

My idea was to use brightly coloured fishing nets, that would contrast with the deep green of the Ligurian vegetation. These very light structures fluttered like sails on the sea.

1994 Vele dell’entroterra

Questa installazione è ambientata sulle colline alle spalle di Monterosso in Liguria.
Tradizionalmente i contadini raccoglievano le olive piazzando dei grandi teli ai piedi degli alberi e poi battendo i rami con delle lunghe canne. Le ripide terrazze a picco sul mare, dove vengono piantati gli ulivi, rendono difficoltosa la raccolta con sistemi meccanici e per tale motivo gli oliveti tradizionali sono stati un po’ alla volta abbandonati.

La mia idea è stata di utilizzare reti da pesca dai colori vivaci, che contrastassero fortemente con il verde intenso della vegetazione ligure. Queste strutture molto leggere fluttuano come vele sul mare.
