2004 Zero Tolerance for the Ugly

Buildings of artistic and historical importance are often listed and protected by law.
But how to act against the plethora of poorly designed and poorly constructed buildings that invade, infest and ruin the beauty of our cities ​​and countryside?

Back in 2004 I started a campaign to raise people’s awareness of the aesthetic value of our built environment.
Inspired by the Hobo signs of the early 1900’s, I created three pictograms to identify buildings worth to be loved, with interesting interiors, or to be torn down without remorse. I also created and promoted a website to initiate a register of such buildings, in my neighborhood to begin with, soon to be extended to the whole city of Milan.
No famous architect to be spared, no prisoners taken.

I attracted attention, got reviews and interviews, but overall the initiative was far from successful and soon died out.

Gli edifici di importanza artistica e storica sono spesso elencati e protetti dalla legge.
Ma come agire contro la pletora di edifici mal progettati e mal costruiti che invadono, infestano e rovinano la bellezza delle nostre città e campagne?

Nel 2004 ho iniziato una campagna per sensibilizzare le persone sul valore estetico del nostro ambiente costruito.
Ispirato dai segni Hobo dei primi del 1900, ho creato tre pittogrammi per identificare gli edifici che meritano di essere amati, con interni interessanti o da abbattere senza rimorsi. Ho anche creato e promosso un sito Web per avviare un registro di tali edifici, nel mio quartiere per cominciare, che presto verrà esteso a tutta la città di Milano.
Nessun famoso architetto fu risparmiato, nessun prigioniero fu preso.
Ho attirato l’attenzione, ho ottenuto recensioni e interviste, ma nel complesso l’iniziativa è stata tutt’altro che riuscita e presto si è estinta.
