2008 Positive/Negative – Micro Land Art 1 (Oman)

On vacation on an Omani beach I recruited the local crabs to perform some conceptual work.

When you dig a hole, the ensuing materials must go somewhere. They can be scattered around to make them unobstrusive, removed to be dumped elsewhere, or piled up to occupy as little land as possible.

The crabs, because of their working technique, were comfortable shaping conical holes and, after a few unsuccessful attempts, I managed to train two of them to build similarly shaped conical mounds.
The result was neat and photogenic exercise where positive volumes and shapes balance the negative ones.

In vacanza su una spiaggia dell’Oman ho reclutato i granchi locali per eseguire alcuni lavori concettuali.

Quando scavi una buca, i materiali che ne conseguono devono andare da qualche parte. Possono essere sparsi in giro per renderli discreti, rimossi per essere scaricati altrove o ammucchiati per occupare meno spazio possibile.

I granchi, grazie alla loro tecnica di lavoro, erano a loro agio nel modellare buchi conici e, dopo alcuni tentativi falliti, riuscii ad addestrarne due per costruire tumuli conici, sempre di forma simile.
Il risultato è stato un esercizio ordinato e fotogenico, in cui forme e volumi positivi bilanciano quelli negativi.
