2012 Prayers in the Wind (Gran Paradiso National Park)

Prayer flags are an important part of Tibetan (and Nepali) Buddhist culture. They are found almost everywhere in the Himalayas, in the cities as in the remotest mountains: fluttering in the wind, braving extreme weather.
Locals know that the prayers and mantras printed on the colourful flags will be blown by the wind spreading good will and compassion.

So, I thought, why not have our own laic version in the Italian Alps?
And what can be more Mediterranean than a laundry line with pegs sporting warm colours.
Here, at high altitude, with no sea or even trees in view, but with only sundried grass in the background, the pegs are more visible when, free of clothes, they play with the wind.

2012 Preghiere al vento (Parco nazionale del Gran Paradiso)

Le bandiere di preghiera sono una parte importante della cultura buddista tibetana e nepalese. Si trovano quasi ovunque in Himalaya, nelle città come sulle montagne più remote: svolazzanti nel vento, sfidano il clima estremo.
La gente del posto sa che le preghiere e i mantra stampati sulle bandiere colorate saranno trasportati dal vento, diffondendo buoni sentimenti e compassione.

Così mi sono detto: perché non creare una nostra versione laica, nelle Alpi italiane?
E cosa può esserci di più mediterraneo di un filo per il bucato, decorato con mollette dai colori saturi.
Qui, ad alta quota, lontano dalla presenza del mare e persino degli alberi, con solo erba prosciugata dal sole a fare da sfondo, le mollette risaltano in modo particolare quando, in assenza di panni stesi, giocano con il vento.
