2016 Crown of Thorns (Hong Kong)

The School of Our Lady of the Rosary in Kennedy Town had a safety problem. A ventilation duct close to the entrance was used by kids to climb onto a perimeter wall putting them at risk of getting hurt.
The dean was telling this rather uninteresting story at a friends’ dinner party. I immediately saw an opportunity to contribute as a designer and an artist and I offered my help to solve the problem.
Considering the surrounding environment, I hardly could resist the temptation to infuse a religious undertone.

Barbed wire would certainly dissuade trespassers and at the same time would evoke a powerful imaginery central to Catholic religion, that of the Passion of Christ translated in contemporary terms: totally abstract and of course far less gruesome, but still inspiring awe.

2016 Corona di spine (Hong Kong)

La scuola di Nostra Signora del Rosario a Kennedy Town doveva risolvere un problema di sicurezza. Un condotto di ventilazione veniva utilizzato dai bambini per arrampicarsi sul muro di cinta, rischiando di farsi male.

Il preside stava raccontando questa storia piuttosto noiosa ad una cena di comuni amici.
Ho immediatamente colto l’opportunità per offrire il mio contributo di designer e artista per risolvere il problema.
Considerato il contesto, non ho resistito alla tentazione di infondere una componente religiosa ad un problema meramente pratico.

Il filo spinato ha indubbiamente un effetto dissuasivo e al tempo stesso evoca una formidabile iconografia centrale alla religione cattolica, quella della Passione di Cristo raffigurata in termini contemporanei: totalmente astratto, ovviamente molto meno raccapricciante, ma ancora capace di suscitare un timore reverenziale.
